Is this baby yours?

For five years I sent out wooden boxed fetuses to all corners of the globe, laying my embryos, like the cuckoo bird, in strangers' nests. Three hundred wooden boxes were sent in search of a potential father to adopt their contents. In the box I laid four different forms: declaration of fatherhood, declaration of adoption, denial of fatherhood and alternative reaction to the child left on their doorstep.

Is this baby yours?

Despite the fact that a tissue sample has not been taken, it is most likely that indirect encounters with fertilizing material, including yours, have brought about its conception and subsequent birth.
Your being a creature of this world, as I am, has made this relationship inevitable. I therefore see you as a full partner in the creation of this life pulsating within me. life incessantly being formed, slowly and inexorably emitting new offspring.
Are you willing to acknowledge your fatherhood, and to accept full responsibility for this child?
YOUR REPLY WILL MAKE THIS offspring entirely your own creation.
                                                                       sincerely
                                                                 miri (mary) nishri

This fertilized box is the unfinished creation, artistic or other, and it requires the addressee's recognition and devoted attention in order to be born in full. In this case the responsibility to carry it until birth falls on the "father". Most recipients reacted in a highly emotional manner as if this were actually a live breathing enfant at stake.

The success was greater than I hoped for - a family of 120 "fathers" and "babies" was created. After two years I had already received 90 responses which were shown in a large exhibition in "Hakibbutz" Gallery curated by Tali Tamir.

Responses from fathers:

The project continued to have a life of its own, and during the next three years I received more responses which were collected into a uniquely designed book, published by "Omanut-Laam". Modeled after the original box, the book contained all the responses received up to that time. The individual pages of the "book" were laid in the box, randomly ordered, and awaiting further responses.
